The town of Suvereto, in the province of Livorno
In our region there´s a lot of wine and olive oil growing. There is also plenty of livestock breeding and agriculture. And when we talk about there being more trees than people, that’s no exaggeration. Suvereto has about 3,000 inhabitants, but all around there are forests and fields up to the horizon. So it is not surprising that the name Suvereto comes from the Latin word Suber (cork). Because cork oak forests can still be found everywhere in the region today.
The municipality has been awarded a prize by the Italian Touring Club and is a recommended stop on the route of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”. Art, history, tradition as well as a very good gastronomy and interesting wine cellars make Suvereto a worthwhile stop. When you stay with us, you are only a few kilometres away from the ancient city walls of Suvereto.
Important dates are the medieval events, the Palio of Suvereto or the famous wild boar festival. On some July evenings, you step through the town gate and are greeted with a medieval welcome. The town is then transformed, the lights are dimmed, ancient crafts are shown, there are lots of artists. It's a real spectacle.
In May and August, the Palio takes place. Teams from the districts and neighbouring hamlets compete in barrel rolling through the narrow and steep streets of the old town. It's a hot time here!
For the Boar Festival in December, Suvereto is transformed into a large outdoor restaurant. The streets become a gourmet mile. Visitors' palates are delighted with many different dishes of wild boar and chestnut and, of course, the fresh wine from the last harvest is not to be missed.
